May 11, we celebrate another Mother's Day. For those unaware, this date was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 in the United States, specifically in the state of West Virginia. Moreover, we can say that this date is parallel connected with the history of the YMCA of Rio Grande do Sul

The celebration of Mother's Day, which always occurs on the second Sunday in May, was brought to the country in 1918 by the then Secretary-General of the ACM RS, Frank Long. The city of Porto Alegre was the first in Brazil to celebrate this date, the 12th of May of that same year.

Over time, the celebration began to have greater publicity and notoriety, to be consolidated as one of the main festivals in the country. In 1932, by Decree No. 21,366, Getulio Vargas made official the holiday in Brazil. Fifteen years later, the date was included in the official calendar of the Catholic Church, as determined by the Cardinal Archbishop of Rio's time, Mr. Don Jaime de Barros Chamber.

Already in 1968, when the honor of Mother's Day turned 50, ACM RS government received a commemorative stamp. This year, that day will be even more special because almost a full century of introduction to the country. Among the activities planned is the Blessing Ecumenical Tribute to Mothers, which will take place on 10/05 at 10:30 am, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Porto Alegre.
